How to Apply Rhinestone Appliques to Fabric
Share
Rhinestone appliques offer a fast way to add a finished, professional focal point to bridal gowns, dance costumes, pageant wear, Mardi Gras creations, and accessories. The best attachment method depends on the applique backing, the fabric, and how the finished piece will be worn and cleaned.
Before you begin
Place the applique on the garment before attaching it. Check the design from several angles and, if possible, while the garment is being worn. Mark the position lightly with tailor's chalk or removable fabric marker. Always test your attachment method on a scrap of the same fabric first, especially when working with delicate, sheer, stretch, or heat-sensitive material.
Method 1: Sew the applique by hand
Hand sewing gives you control and is often the safest choice for bridal, formalwear, and performance garments. Use a fine needle and a strong thread that matches the applique backing or garment.
- Pin or lightly baste the applique in position.
- Bring the needle up through the fabric close to the applique edge.
- Take small stitches through the backing between stones and beads. Do not pull the thread across the top of rhinestones.
- Stitch around the perimeter and add several anchor points through the center.
- Knot securely on the garment's reverse side without pulling tightly enough to pucker the fabric.
For heavy pieces, use more anchor points. Stretch garments should be supported in their natural shape while you sew so the applique does not restrict movement.
Method 2: Use fabric adhesive
A flexible, washable fabric adhesive can work for projects that cannot easily be sewn. Read the adhesive manufacturer's fabric and care instructions. Apply small dots to the backing rather than coating the stones, then press the applique into position. Allow the full recommended curing time before moving or wearing the garment.
Avoid household hot glue for long-term garment applications. It can become stiff, show through delicate fabric, or soften with heat. Adhesive can also leave a permanent mark, which is why testing matters.
For the strongest hold
For costumes, gowns, and accessories that will experience movement or repeated use, combine a small amount of suitable fabric adhesive with discreet hand stitches. The adhesive holds the placement while the stitches provide lasting support.
Care after application
Follow the care requirements of both the garment and applique. Spot cleaning or gentle hand cleaning is often safest for heavily embellished pieces. Avoid harsh twisting, high dryer heat, and direct ironing over rhinestones or beads.
